Description:
Niquet re-recorded Fauré's Requiem, coupled with secret works by Gounod and others] Hervé Niquet and his hand-picked band, Le Conseil Spirituel, have re-recorded Fauré's Requiem. Niquet also recorded Fauré with the Flanders Radio Choir in 2014, so this is a re-recording after an interval of about eight years. As in the previous recording, Niquet has taken the 1893 version as the basis for this one, omitting the bassoon, trumpet, trombone, and timpani. The performance is full of the beauty of the work and Niquet's typical muscular expression can be heard here and there, especially in the powerful "Sanctus". The strength of the "Sanctus" is especially distinctive, bringing out a new charm in the standard "Requiem. The coupling includes the Mass for mixed chorus and organ, begun by Gounod in 1891 and published after his death in 1896, which was composed to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of the baptism of Clovis I (ca. 466-511), the first king of the Merovingian Frankish kingdom, who was a patron saint in France after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. It is believed to have been written with the 1400th anniversary of his baptism in mind, and is named the "Mass of Clovis.Based on Gregorian chant, the work references Renaissance techniques such as palestrina, but also has a Gounod-like uniqueness. These two pieces are followed by a religious piece by Louis Aubert for solo soprano, solo violin, chorus, and organ, and a kind of meditation for violin and organ written by André Caplet for religious ceremonies. Among them, Louis Aubert has the distinction of singing "Pie Jesu" as boy soprano at the premiere of the first edition of Fauré's Requiem in 1888 (and also, in later years, as a pianist, the brilliant man who premiered Ravel's "Noble and Sentimental Waltz"). The violin soloist is Shushanne Syranosyan, who is active as a soloist all over the world in addition to being the concertmaster of Le Conseil Spirituel, and her performance is brilliant in both technique and expression.
