Description:
This is the 16th installment of #bruckner2024, a project led by the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record every manuscript of Bruckner's complete symphonic works. Bruckner's Third Symphony, nicknamed "Wagner" because of Bruckner's dedication to Wagner, has three drafts, and with each revision, the entire work was shortened and quotations from Wagner's works were removed. The CAPRICCIO's #bruckner2024 lists all three drafts, plus the first and second drafts, as well as the third draft. CAPRICCIO's #bruckner2024 includes all three drafts, as well as the 1876 Adagio composed between the first and second drafts (which Nowak named "Adagio 2"). This allows us to trace the trajectory of the creation and revision of No. 3 through the same conductor's interpretation. Poschner's interpretation has been consistent from the very beginning, breaking away from the heavy sound and tempo, and making the sound clear and easy to understand. The 1876 Adagio has recordings by Tintner and Vänskä, both of which exceed 20 minutes in playing time, but Poschner's is about 16 minutes. It is more plaintive and lyrical than meditative. Still, the second movement of the second draft (1877) (Andante...quasi adagio. Compared to the performance time of approximately 14 minutes), it is clear that the conductor is well aware of this subtle difference in tempo designation. This attitude will be reaffirmed in its significance and utility now that recordings of different manuscripts have been accumulated. Bruckner scholar William Callaghan says of Bruckner's alternate manuscripts, "Don't look for your own taste, your own ideal, your own ultimate form. All scores have value. The Third in particular is a masterpiece. This is a piece that fans who feel what he said should definitely listen to. The domestic edition comes with a Japanese commentary by Yutaro Ishihara (musicologist and member of the International Bruckner Society). Naxos Japan
