Alban Tixier is the father of Laurent Tixier, an old-time lutenist who was well versed in the poetry of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. His first solo album sheds light on the French music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, when the lute was an important solo instrument among European intellectuals. The music of Alban Tixier, who studied the lute from the time he performed at a Renaissance dance festival performed by his father when he was 10 years old, is said by his teacher Miguel Henri, who is known for his extensive activities, to be "surprisingly intimate with the lute, an instrument that should be alien to modern people" (from the liner notes preface), and the great appeal of the music is its unassuming narrative that brings centuries-old music to life "now," without any sense of self-consciousness. The music of the past is still alive and well today. From the golden age of troubadours (medieval poets in the south of France), through the Renaissance period when the number of scores for solo lute increased dramatically, including arrangements of vocal masterpieces, to the world of French court dances written down by Praetorius, this program offers a broad overview of music history, all in a single volume with an extremely natural narrative style. The program is a collection of music with a very natural narrative.The recording engineer is Frank Jaffre, an engineer/producer known for his work on the Zig-Zag Territoires label, which along with ALPHA has many great old music recordings. The recording is also a joy to listen to. The liner notes (in French and English), written by Jaffre himself as well as his teacher and his father, are also very tasteful, making this a disc where you can fully enjoy the charm of "coming into contact with ancient music.
