Haydn, the "father of the symphony," wrote more than 100 symphonies over a period of nearly 40 years, leading his pupil Beethoven to break new ground in the same field. In the "Haydn 2032" project, which will record all of Haydn's symphonies, sometimes with related works, by 2032, the composer's 300th anniversary, the conductor is the brilliant Giovanni Antonini, who has continued to demonstrate a remarkable presence in the field of ancient music instrumental performance.Since the project's inception in 2014, it has garnered attention for its brilliant new interpretations, in which the flair and deep insights of the conductors and performers have been found in every corner. For the 15th installment of the project, which has reached the midpoint of its careful and successful development, we have selected three substantial works by composers in their 40s and 50s, when the fruition of Haydn's creativity in the Marquise of Esterházy, the center of his compositional activities, was attracting attention from remote areas. Antonini's baton will shed all the light on the charm of Haydn's most skillful use of dramatic writing derived from the stage music that thrilled the court theater, and the thrilling balance between folk tones and intellectual sophistication. The orchestra will perform No. 50, in which natural brass and timpani play an active role, the unusual No. 62, in which all the movements are in the same key, and No. 85, the masterpiece of the "Paris Symphony," which is known as the favorite of Queen Marie-Antoinette of France. In addition to the excellent performance by the Basel Chamber Orchestra, which is a master of ancient instruments, this series also features background commentary based on the latest research (in three languages: English, French, and German, with a full Japanese translation including supplementary information on the domestic edition), and an extensive booklet with many beautiful photos related to the theme.Please take your time to enjoy these three pieces, which will make you realize the unfathomable depth of Haydn as you glimpse into the depths of his compositional style.
