Johann Strauss II(1825-1899): "The Gypsy Baron" - Treasure Waltz (arranged by E. D'Honagni) Performed by Sofia Gyuribadamova (Piano) 1910 Bösendorfer with curved keys of Klassum Collection of the Museum of the History of Music, Budapest Recorded: July 19-21, 2022 Museum of the History of Music, Budapest, Hungary Total recording time: 68 min. The Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi (Ernee Dohnányi) was an excellent pianist and had a keen interest in inventing and improving musical instruments. He was particularly fond of pianos with semicircular curved keys and became a proponent of this instrument around 1909-1910. The keyboard of this system allows the player to play without moving his body, since the distance from the center of the body remains almost the same when playing any of the high, middle, or low notes. After its development in the 1820s, there were competitive practical applications in Austria, London, and Germany, and then the Australian musician and inventor Frederick Crassum (1869-1934), an Australian musician and inventor, patented the instrument in December 1907. Classum presented the new instrument in Berlin at the end of 1908 or early 1909, and also worked with famous pianists and piano makers, including D'Honagni, who played and promoted the instrument made by the famous piano manufacturer Ibach. The instruments were to be delivered to music academies around the country, but it seems that few were actually purchased.D'Honani himself was a longtime user of this instrument, and from his chamber music concert in October 1910 to the concert held in April 1913, the program and reviews included the annotation "Rudolf Ibach concert grand piano with Kratzum keys." The works on this album were composed before World War I and were presumably written with this unique piano in mind. Sofia Gyuribadamova plays a 1910 Bösendorfer instrument. The company is said to have made two Klassum-keyed instruments for Dodonani, one for home use and the other for concerts, according to his second wife Elsa. After his death, the home instrument passed through the hands of Ferenc Farkas, a professor at the Liszt School of Music, and is now in the collection of the Museum of the History of Music in Budapest. The instrument was restored for this recording, and apart from its unique appearance, it has a warm sound that perfectly matches the work. (Naxos Japan)
