Arvid Jansons' stereo live performance from the BBC archives] Arvid Jansons (1914-1984) was a famous Latvian conductor who became well known in Japan through his many visits to Japan and performances with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. This year marks the 110th anniversary of his birth and the 40th anniversary of his death, and the first authorized release of his valuable recordings on BBC recordings. In 1984, shortly after his performance of Mahler's 5th Symphony with the Halle Orchestra, he collapsed of a heart attack and died in Manchester. He performed "Sleeping Beauty" at the Proms on September 13, 1971, and a monaural CD of the performance has existed in the past, but "Francesca da Rimini" on the same day, Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 four days later, and "Classics" with the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra in 1983 are considered to be the first time that such a CD has been released. All are in stereo. And all in stereo.The two pieces recorded in the huge Royal Albert Hall have a low sense of separation, as expected, but Paul Bailey, who has a reputation for mastering historical recordings, has carefully remastered them to create a superb sound that directly conveys the quality of the performance. The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in its prime, trained by Mravinsky, is very strong, with strings undulating in unison like a large creature and the brass roaring with intense pressure. The excitement of the audience is also evident in the hall-shaking cheers that are typical of the Proms, and the recording of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony is in excellent condition. This is a must-hear musical legacy that reminds us once again of the high caliber of Arvid Jansons, whose recordings are scarce. Naxos Japan
