Description:
The unknown masterpieces of the post-Rossini generation, performed by an ancient instrumental ensemble under the direction of Rousset and a distinguished lineup of singers! In March 1831, a few months after the premiere of Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" at the Paris Conservatory, a young female composer presented a new Italian-language opera based on Goethe's "Faust" at the Teatre Favard (also known as the Italian Theatre) in Paris. The composer, Louise Bertin, was a contemporary of Berlioz, the daughter of Louis-François Bertin, a writer who was very influential in the July Monarchy, which was born after the Bourbons were repelled in the Revolution the previous year, and was close to V. Hugo and the composer Gounod. Although she was handicapped by polio, she received an impeccable musical education through her father's arrangements and her mother, a pianist, who surprised everyone with her talent from her early years. Based on "The Last Scene of Faust" written in 1826 for the famous singer Malibran, she composed "Faust" on an Italian libretto in four acts, each entitled "Temptation," "Happiness," "Sin," and "Punishment," and the widely known ominous story of Faust's descent into hell and Margarita (Greatchen)'s reception into heaven. The music is surprisingly fresh and captivating. Many experienced singers such as Dehe and Gauvin participate in the performance, and the contrasting and deeply polished old instrumental performance under the direction of Rousset is truly wonderful. The orchestral technique that elaborately enlivens the dramatic development is firmly supported by a melodic sense based on the fashion of the time, and the unique style, which is not at all a subgenre of Rossini or Donizetti, is full of charm that is worth deepening the listening experience. The commentary (in French and English) is once again a fascinating read, detailing the work and its background while taking into account the history of Goethe's musicalization of "Faust" and noting the difficulties faced by female composers at the time. The book is also illustrated with numerous illustrations. Naxos Japan
