The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chief Conductor Maxim Emelianichev's pre-inauguration recording of Schubert's "Great" (NYCX-10112/CKD619) was acclaimed as "the most thrilling performance of the work" (BBC Magazine). This recording, made to commemorate the orchestra's 50th anniversary in January 2024, is the result of more than ten years of work by Mendelssohn, nearly half of his life, since he was inspired by the nature of Scotland during his travels there, The third symphony, "Scotland," was the last symphony Mendelssohn completed in his lifetime. The symphony is accompanied by No. 5, "Reformation," the second symphony completed by the young Mendelssohn after the prototype No. 1, which quotes the Lutheran chorale "God is My Hut". In both works, the transparency of the small group of strings, with their restrained vibrato, is impressive. In "Scotland," each part is well played, and not only the melody is beautifully sung, but also the orchestration is interesting.In the "Reformation," Emelianichev makes the orchestra sing powerfully, and he also makes full use of echo-like effects to express the melody in an extended manner, fully demonstrating the splendor of this work. In the fourth movement, Emelianichev, who is well versed in period technique as a keyboardist of ancient music, uses the serpan as originally specified. Naxos Japan
