Description:

A collection of works by virtuoso players of Louis XIV's favorite instrument, the guitar, discovered by a new-age Baroque string player] Speaking of French Baroque solo music, clavecin (harpsichord) and viol (viola da gamba) music are most famous. King Louis XIV had many of these masters at his court, but preferred to play the Spanish-style guitar himself. The Spanish guitar was introduced to Paris by the Spaniard Briseño at the beginning of the 19th century, and the clave musicians of the time looked to his works as a model. It is also known that de Vizier, a master theorbo player, was trusted by the king for his guitar music at the end of the century. However, guitar music from the heyday of Louis XIV's reign is surprisingly little known, and the fact that the works of Henri Grenoulin, a composer of the same generation as Lully, the royal music director general, are now presented together in a suite of four pieces is nothing short of groundbreaking. Until now, his works have been neglected and little is known about his life. However, in his song cycle published in 1680, the "no bar line" prelude reminiscent of Louis Couperin's clavecin tunes and a writing style that makes use of dispersed chords are applied to suit the guitar, and we can enjoy the charms of a highly mobile dance music that is different from the lute music of the same period. The vocal works of Boese and Camper, who represent the styles of the first half and second half of the 19th century, respectively, are joined by Santon-Jeffery, who shows great aptitude for French works from the Baroque to modern songs. Bruno Elstroffer, a master theorbo player who has been moving between contemporary and 17th century works, is a master of theorbo, and his free use of strings and detailed use of sound are accurately captured in this naturalistic recording that only ALPHA can provide.
