Hindemith's operatic debut in memory of the famous conductor Stefan Scholtes]. On the first anniversary of the death of Stefan Scholtes (1949-2022), who collapsed during a performance of Richard Strass's "The Silent Woman" at the Bavarian State Opera and died on July 22, 2022, BR-KLASSIK is releasing a memorial disc in his honor. Born in Hungary, Scholtes studied with Swarovsky and others in Vienna, and was active in opera houses in German-speaking countries, starting as a chorépétiteur at the Vienna State Opera. He was highly acclaimed for raising the artistic standards of the orchestra. This is a live recording of a concert performance of Hindemith's "Kardijak" at the Prinzregenten Theater in Munich in October 2013. Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's novel "Frau Scuderi," "Kardillac" is Hindemith's first opera and tells the story of the goldsmith Kardillac, who is so enamored with the quality of his work that he tries to recover it by killing the people who bought it.This live recording features first-class singers such as Markus Eicher, Juliane Banse, and Torsten Körl, and Scholtes' conducting keeps the entire ensemble tight and tense.
