Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and earned a reputation as a pioneering African-American musician, especially in the United States. This two-CD set contains his religious and secular choral music, much of it recorded for the first time. This release was made possible by conductor Michael Waldron, who was intrigued by Coleridge-Taylor's choral music and impressed by the depth and diversity of its musicality. The recorded works are diverse in mood, ranging from simple pieces to grandiose pieces reminiscent of cantatas. Naxos Japan
