[Harding’s First Recording of “The Planets” Arrives on a Rarely Seen Grand Scale!] Although Harding is from the UK, surprisingly, he had never recorded the complete “The Planets” until now; the only previous recording was “Jupiter” from a live concert with the Vienna Philharmonic at Schönbrunn Palace. This new live recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is truly outstanding. The total running time is nearly 57 minutes—an unusually long duration compared to other recordings of this work, which typically run around 50 minutes. Harding allows the phrases to sing out fully at a somewhat slower tempo, adding subtle nuances, and his intention to make the most of the unique orchestration—such as highlighting the bass oboe—is evident. According to the label, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra had not performed this piece for a long time. With an orchestra that possesses a high level of technical skill but lacks a deeply ingrained tradition regarding *The Planets*, Harding is able to present his interpretation exactly as he envisions it. In “Mars,” the orchestra marks the tempo with a weighty sound, and in the famous melody of the middle section of “Jupiter,” it sings with great power. In “Saturn,” the contrast between the meditative soft passages and the explosive middle section is striking. The vocalise in the final women’s chorus of “Neptune” is repeated extremely slowly, gradually fading away as the volume is reduced to a whisper.
