Niccolò Castiglioni was a distinctive personality in the Italian music world of the late 20th century. After studying under Boris Bracher and Friedrich Goulda and making his debut as a neoclassical composer influenced by Stravinsky, he became an avant-garde composer. 1966 he went to the U.S., where he taught at universities and produced a series of works, sometimes controversial in their absurdity, Returning to Italy in 1970, he returned to his roots, teaching composition at the Conservatory of Milan until his death in 1996. This first volume of the complete works, which includes world premiere recordings, includes Castiglioni's early piano works, including a piano sonatina that could be considered a study piece, a neoclassical "Small Suite," and "Four Songs," which explores 12-tone technique, as well as his later works, including "Sonatina No. 2" discovered in his estate after his death. The "Suite" is a collection of works by the composer. Also of interest are "How to Spend a Summer," in which only one of the pieces in the suite is designated to be played on an upright piano, and "In the Beginning There is a Dance," in the simplified style of his later years.Pianist Aldo Orvieto is a specialist in 20th century Italian piano works and has an extensive recording and performing career.
