The Psophos Quartet is a quartet of the 21st century that has been steadily captivating the world with its lighthearted yet exquisite interpretation of Haydn. In France, where many string quartets are active on the world stage, the Psophos Quartet has had a relatively steady career while also successfully working with a number of contemporary composers. This time, however, the quartet is taking a sharp turn toward classical music. Haydn's Op. 54 is one of the string quartets composed during the string quartet boom that followed his Op. 33 collection (1781), which greatly inspired his peers in Vienna and elsewhere, and at a time when the composer was building an enormous reputation in Paris, London, and other major cities. It is a remarkable work that strikes a perfect balance between solid composition and a hint of folk music. The Psophos Quartet's interpretation has a light, vibrato-free thrust that is reminiscent of period playing, but the more you listen to it, the more elaborate the interpretation and the deeper the nuances become, so there is no shortage of things to listen to.In the G major quartet Hob. III-58, as in the interpretation of the Ysaye Quartet, which is also their guide, it is interesting to hear some details that are slightly different from the common version right from the beginning. The sound production, which does not betray the stylistic sense of Haydn's works, is truly a new and innovative one, and their music, which has a sense of fun lurking everywhere in its robust structure, is the most interesting to listen to.
