Description:
The highly-acted recitations are like music, reminiscent of the salons of the 17th century, with a succession of successful large-scale projects including Bach's vocal works and Rameau's operas by the leading French conductors of the day. Valentin Tournet is one of the new generation of French conductors of ancient music. A viol (gamba) player, he is not content to rest on his laurels with his reputation for large-scale works at La Chapelle Armonique, which he conducts himself, but continues to pick up his own instrument and present remarkable small-format programs as well. This album, recorded live at the cutting edge of the field, is based on the famous "Fables" by La Fontaine (1621-1695), a poet who captivated the court of Louis XIV, as well as the dramatists Molière and Racine, the great painters Leblanc and Mignard, the musicians Lully and Chambonnière, and others. Baroque singer Thierry Pétaud recites the well-known Japanese poems "The Ant and the Grasshopper (Ants and Cicadas)" and "The Frog That Wants to Be Bigger than an Ox" in a clear, well acted recitation of several tracks. The music of the French court of the 17th and 18th centuries is woven together with exquisite old instrumental performances, both vocal and instrumental, and when listened to in its entirety, the beauty and flavor of Peteau's voice makes the recitations seem like part of the music. The live recording, with the occasional sound of laughter from the audience, gives the listener a sense of being in the salon of the witty French courtesans of the 17th century. This atmosphere, which is only possible because the wine is shipped directly from the home of the baroque music, will captivate even those who are not fans of the baroque music. This is one piece that makes you want to open a bottle of wine. Naxos Japan
