Description:
Thomas Adès is one of the greatest exponents of the last century and this century, and one of my favorite composers to conduct" - Nicholas Colón, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Nicholas Colón is the first conductor in the history of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (FRSO) to come from abroad. His first work with the FRSO, Sibelius: Symphony No. 7, etc. (NYCX-10305 [domestic edition]/ODE-1404 [imported edition]), was praised for its authentic interpretation, delicate attention to tone, and superb control of the orchestra, and his second work is the remarkable Thomas Adès! In the "3rd Finnish Radio Music Festival" in the fall of 2021, Colon's first season as FRSO, the main focus was on Thomas Adès, one of the most famous British composers. Of particular note was the world premiere of the orchestral version of "Marchentanze Fairy Tale Dances" performed by Pekka Kuusisto. The piece was co-commissioned by the Louis Vuitton Foundation and the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation and written for violin and piano, and was scheduled to be premiered at Composium 2020 at Tokyo Opera City with Ades on piano and Leela Josebowitz, but due to the spread of a new corona infection Ades' visit to Japan was cancelled due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and the piece was premiered by Ades and Pekka Kuusisto in Paris in October 2021.The orchestral version recorded here was commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (Yle). The work consists of four movements based on English folk songs, and has a familiar atmosphere in addition to Ades' brilliant orchestration and virtuosity. The third movement, which depicts the flight of a lark, is reminiscent of Vaughan Williams' "The Flying Lark. Hotel Suite" is an orchestral suite based on the material from the opera "Powder Her Face," which was written by the 24-year-old Adès and was his breakthrough work. The story is based on a real-life aristocratic scandal, with music by Alban Berg, Britten, Weill, and Piazzolla. Adès liked the music so much that he has created three orchestral suites, the Hotel Suite being the most recent. The Found Place is a substantial cello concerto written for Stephen Isserlis. The first movement depicts water, the second mountains (mountaineers), followed by a meditative third movement, and ends with a technical finale that quotes Offenbach's cancan. Dawn was commissioned by the BBC Proms in 2020." The subtitle, "Chacony for orchestra at any distance," tells the story of how it was composed. At the time, there was debate over how much distance between performers on stage would be safe to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, so Adès wrote this work "to be performed in any arrangement." In August 2020, the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Simon Rattle, will give the premiere. Naxos Japan
