The Haitink Memorial Concert with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk, an overwhelming live recordingOn November 26, 2021, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk gave a special concert in memory of Bernard Haitink, who passed away a little more than a month earlier after 61 years of collaboration (they also performed the following day). The program included Mahler's Symphony No. 9, which Haitink had previously conducted. It was conducted by Simon Rattle, who will assume the position of Chief Conductor beginning in the 2023/24 season. The orchestra, which has a tradition of Mahler performance cultivated by successive chief conductors such as Kubelík, Maazel, and Jansons, as well as the world's best performance ability, performed under the direction of one of the best Mahler conductors of our time, and the performance was an overwhelming success. Rattle, who has released a CD of the same concert with the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic, was so impressed with the quality of this concert that he strongly requested that it be released on CD.
