Description:

Frontline players of ancient music uncover the truth about the origins of German music What kind of music did the real-life Tannhäuser play? In "Tannhäuser" and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," there are scenes of singing contests, but what you hear there is 19th century German music, and many of the ballads by Löwe, which are rooted in folk songs, are Romantic music with piano accompaniment. What kind of music did these medieval Germans actually hear? The Ensemble Celadon, a group of players specializing in medieval and Renaissance music and active in various ensembles, will bring back to life the true face of the Minnesang (courtly love songs) that flourished in Germany several hundred years ago, with outstanding interpretations backed by thorough research of historical documents and extensive performance experience. The music is performed on the Welsh folk stringed instrument, the crux. The beautiful high notes sung by the famous singer Bundgen are reminiscent of the colorful miniature paintings that adorned medieval manuscripts, backed by the instrumental sounds of Welsh folk stringed instrument kruse, medieval lute, organettes, and other instruments that give the song an otherworldly feel. Some of the poems are based on ancient themes that remind us of the budding of humanism, while others are based on animal allegories and offer a glimpse of a unique view of nature. This is a piece that also provides a true insight into the poet-singers in later medieval thematic creations such as Walter von der Vogelweide and Tannhäuser.
