Description:

Donald Tovey is an English musicologist and composer. He studied composition with Hubert Parry at Oxford University, where he worked on composition from a young age. After graduation, he became friends with the violinist Joachim and played as a pianist in a series of chamber music concerts, including a performance of Brahms' piano quintet. He was also one of the foremost music critics of his time and a noted reviser of piano works by Bach and Beethoven. Tovey was also a friend of Pablo Casals, one of the most important cellists of the 20th century, and their exchange resulted in a concerto for cello and the two sonatas for cello included on this album. Each piece has a long, breathy melody reminiscent of Brahms, and the huge passacaglia in the last movement of the Sonata for unaccompanied cello demands superb virtuosity. The arrangement of Bach's Prelude in C minor, recorded for the first time in the world, was written by the 12-year-old Tovey. A beautiful cello melody is added to the original lute tune. Naxos Japan
