A collection of live recordings of bass-baritone George London (1920-1985), who dominated the world's opera houses during his short career, is being re-released. Born in Canada, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, George London later immigrated with his family to the U.S., where he studied singing in earnest and made Los Angeles his home. In the U.S., he became a popular national star singer. In Europe, he made his debut in 1949 with sensational success, and was repeatedly invited to perform at the Vienna State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. His performances of the title role in "Boris Godunov" and "Amonazro" in "Aida" were particularly popular, but record fans will also be familiar with his legendary 1962 enfortas in "Parsifal," conducted by Knappertsbusch. In the late 1960s, London retired from the stage due to a chronic illness of his vocal cords, and focused his energies on training younger singers and improving the art of opera in the United States. This album of his best singing from 1953-1956, the peak of his career, was released in 2000 to critical and fan acclaim, and his Verdi and Wagner with Astrid Varnai was hailed as "electrifying" by BBC Music Magazine.
