This is the fifth installment of the Michael Gielen/ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra series on the ORFEO label. German conductor Michael Gielen (1927-2019) excelled at turning large modern works by Mahler, Schoenberg, and others into music with great detail and perspective. This album contains three Messiaen works conducted by Guillen. The first is an early Messiaen work, the Forgotten Offering, which depicts a human figure who has forgotten the free love of Christ and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Next is "Poem for Mi," a collection of songs for soprano dedicated to Messiaen's first wife, and finally "Chronochromie," in which the voices of birds, which Messiaen loved so much, play an important role. Guillen makes the most of the work's colorful sounds and mysterious atmosphere, weaving fertile music together with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. The solo voice in "Poem for Mi" is sung by Sarah Leonard, a native of England. She is a soprano who specializes in contemporary works by Michael Nyman and Lachenmann. *The recording has been remastered from the original tapes stored at ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation).
