The highlight of Offenbach's Dream Opera series in his later years! Offenbach, the king of French 19th century operettas, is known for his prolific production of groundbreaking complete works, which are also distinguished by the talented Dumousseau's baton. While many of his works have already been recorded, some of his masterpieces have yet to be recorded in their entirety, and "A Trip to the Moon" on the Bru Zane label is one such work. The excerpts performed by the Musiciens du Palais du Louvre under the direction of Marc Minkowski (Archiv label) may be the first time many of you have come in contact with this work. Published in 1875, the same year as Bizet's "Carmen," or five years before Offenbach's death, this ambitious operetta is the fifth in a series of "dream-illusions" that Offenbach explored in his later years. Based on a libretto freely composed with reference to the same title by Jules Verne, the founder of science fiction, the operetta, which combines elements of a dream vision and modern science fiction, was very popular and was performed again in Paris the following year and the year after that, as well as in Vienna and London.The brilliant and talented Dumousseau, whose masterful performance of Debussy's "Pelléas et Mélisande" (ALPHA752/NYCX-10240) is still fresh in our minds, vividly expresses Offenbach's quintessential florid and richly structured fun. The singers are superb in their roles, and the richly illustrated booklet (in French and English), which is unique to this label, allows the audience to fully appreciate the true value of the work.
