This is the first systematic recording of the quintessential madrigale by the composer, who bridged the gap between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and the first recording of the fourth volume, a compilation of the old style published in 1603. As with the recording of Gesualdo's "Book IV," a compilation of old style music from 1603, the precision with which he conducts a very small ensemble of soloists is breathtaking in every piece. The cast includes Barbora Kabatkova, known for her outstanding interpretation of medieval music, and Alex Potter, who has attracted attention for his solo singing of Handel, Telemann, and other composers.This latest recording is overwhelmed by the beauty of each of the 20 microcosms, from the opening piece, in which two sopranos in unison quietly relax the difference in pitch and weave together music, to the surprising development of the final piece, in which an oddly shaped chromatic scale holds strong centripetal force.
