Giordano: The Opera “Siberia” Filmed for the First Time! In the early 19th century, in St. Petersburg, the capital of Imperial Russia. Through the matchmaking of her former lover, the gigolo Grevi, the beautiful Stefana has risen from her humble circumstances as a seamstress to become the mistress of Prince Alexis, living a life of luxury. Vasili, an innocent infantry officer and Stefana’s lover, unwittingly visits the mansion where she lives. Though shocked to see her beautifully dressed, he declares his undying love for her. When Prince Alexis learns of their relationship and strikes Vasili, Vasili, in a fit of rage, shoots and kills him. Stefana sets out for Siberia to follow Vasili, who has been captured and sent into exile there. Several years later, as the two were serving their sentences in the Siberian penal colony, Grevi—who had been sent to Siberia for a different crime—appeared before them… The opera *Siberia* features a libretto by Luigi Illica set in a Siberian penal colony, telling a tragic love story. Giordano composed the music, drawing on the tradition of verismo opera with his tense and gripping orchestration, incorporating Russian melodies performed by the chorus ( such as “Hymn to the Emperor” and “Barge Song on the Volga”). It premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1903. It is said that Gabriel Fauré, who saw a performance of this work in Paris in 1905, spoke highly of its music. In this production, director Roberto And shifts the setting from 19th-century Imperial Russia to 20th-century Soviet Russia, creating a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a bleak Siberian penal colony by projecting pre-filmed scenery and crowd footage onto the stage backdrop. The role of Stefana is sung by soprano Sonya Yoncheva, whose talent has been highly acclaimed in recent years. She delivers a magnificent performance as the passionate heroine. Additionally, tenor Georgi Stura sings the role of the innocent lover Vasili with poignant emotion and a beautiful, resonant voice, while baritone Georges Petian, as Grevi, leaves a strong impression with his natural command of the villainous role. In addition to this exceptional cast of singers, maestro Noseda—who leads the orchestra and chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino—draws out a rich variety of sounds from Giordano’s score, bringing this opera to life in all its dramatic intensity.
