Franck, Cesar (1822-1890)
Description:
César Franck, born on December 10, 1822 in Liège, a large city in French-speaking Belgium, which was then under Dutch rule, made a major contribution to the country's modern music until his death in 1890 in France. César Franck. Although he made his debut as a child prodigy and had a long and varied career as a musician, his achievements as a composer have been limited to a few orchestral and choral works in his later years and, with the exception of a number of organ pieces and violin sonatas, which were his own forte, he has not been given much opportunity to be recognized as a composer. The year 2022, the bicentennial of his birth, will be the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate his music. This new recording on the Bru Zane label is a timely and much-anticipated release, offering a polished interpretation of all the songs he composed during his lifetime. The performance is by the talented Greek baritone Tassis Christoyannis, who has recorded songs and operas by important French composers of the 19th century, both famous and unknown, along with the pianist Jeff Cohen, who has demonstrated his skill in modern and contemporary music and song accompaniment. In addition, Veronique Jance, who continues to be a dominant presence in the French-speaking opera and antique music scene, joins the splendid lineup for the seven duets. The inclusion of rare works such as "To the Victims," for which the original manuscript has been lost, and "In This Land, People," which is only available in manuscript form, is also not to be overlooked. The booklet commentary, which is always very thorough as is usual with this label, is also very readable, and Christoyannis & Cohen's careful interpretation of every detail, with references to multiple different manuscripts, is so reliable that it fulfills all expectations from their recent recording history. This is an album that allows us to listen carefully to the contribution that Franck, who was also familiar with German music, made to the field of French-language songs as the nation of France was being established after the Franco-Prussian War.
