Description:
Norwegian pianist and composer Agathe Bakker-Grondahl (Grendahl). After studying in Oslo, she studied with Hans von Bülow in Florence and Franz Liszt in Weimar. He began his career as an excellent pianist. She gained international fame, especially in London and Paris, and was praised for her playing by Bernard Shaw, one of Ireland's most famous literary figures. She retired from performing when she lost her hearing and became an excellent teacher, mentoring numerous students. As a composer, she left behind some 400 pieces of music for voice and piano, and together with her close friend Edvard Grieg, she made a major contribution to the formation of the golden age of Norwegian music history. Her early works, including the beautiful "Serenade," show the influence of European Romanticism, such as Chopin and Schumann, but her later works adopt the Impressionist style, and "On the Blue Mountain" is considered the first Impressionist work by a Norwegian composer. Her son, Hrychoff Backer-Glondal (1885-1959), also a pianist and composer, actively performed and promoted his mother's works in concert.The performer, Sara Aimée Smyths, is a pianist from Oslo. She studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Royal Conservatory of Music and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oslo.
