Description:
A collection of songs by American female composer Mary Howe. She studied piano from an early age and entered the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She formed a duo with Anne Hull, a pianist she met there, and toured as a pianist in recital from 1920 to 1935. However, her interest shifted to composition, as she had earned a degree in composition, which was rare for a woman at the time. In her early years, she wrote exclusively for piano, but gradually began to write orchestral works in the late Romantic style, reminiscent of Debussy, Mahler, and Richard Strauss. Her "Sand" and "The Stars," both with nature motifs, were performed under the direction of Leopold Stokowski to great acclaim. In 1933, she went to France to study composition, albeit briefly, with Nadia Boulanger, where she honed her skills by absorbing cutting-edge music. This album contains songs and duets from her mature period.The songs, written from the heart in English, French, and German, with a free hand, and sometimes with an aggressive use of dissonance to match the content of the poems, are all very attractive.
