The year 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth. To commemorate this year, the third installment of #bruckner2024, a project to record all Bruckner symphonies in all their versions, is now available. This time, the symphony in D minor, commonly known as "No. 0," is featured. This piece was completed around 1869, after the first, but when Bruckner organized his own work in 1895, he wrote "Die Nullte (invalid)" and did not give it a number. Bruckner, however, did not dispose of the score, but left it behind. Bruckner scholar Hawkshaw wrote in his commentary on the original recording, "Bruckner may have left the judgment of the value of this work to posterity. In fact, this piece has many features of Bruckner's symphonies, such as strong brass and impressive woodwind solos, chorale-like melodies, and folkloric dance-like rhythms. Poschner again uses a fast tempo as the basis of his music, but with a wide range of tempi and intensity to create a lively and full-bodied music. The first movement is a mixture of various melodies, the second movement has the beauty of an andante rather than an adagio, the third movement is impressive for its contrast between a powerful and profound scherzo and a fantastic trio with a drastically reduced tempo, and the final movement is dramatic and magnificent. The score used is the Novak edition, but it can be inferred that the score was meticulously reread for this performance as well. Naxos Japan
