Description:
Theseus, son of Neptune, the god of the sea, and king of Athens, captured Alise, the youngest daughter of the Pallas clan, after destroying his political enemies, the Pallas family. He made her swear to remain a virgin so that her descendants would never threaten his position in the future; however, Alicia is secretly in love with Theseus’s son, Hippolytus. Meanwhile, Theseus’s second wife, Phaedra, harbors an illicit love for Hippolytus, the son of Theseus’s first wife. One day, while Theseus was in the Underworld to rescue a friend, Phaedra, overcome by her feelings, confessed her love to Hippolytus. Hippolytus vehemently rejected her, and just as the two were struggling, Theseus returned. He mistakenly believed his son was attempting to rape his wife. Theseus exiles Hippolytus and pleads with his father, Neptune, to impose a severe punishment on him, but… “Lyric tragedy,” a genre of French opera established by Lully—who served as music director at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King—in collaboration with librettist Philippe Quinault. Rameau, who had already made a name for himself as a composer of instrumental works and a theorist of harmony, completed *Hippolyte et Alice* at the age of 50 as his operatic debut; it followed the “lyrical tragedy” form established by his predecessor, Lully. However, even though this opera is now regarded as one of Rameau’s masterpieces, its innovative compositional techniques sparked a whirlwind of controversy at the time of its premiere. The production directed by Jeanne Candel, which was staged at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in November 2020, features central characters such as Thésée, Hippolyte, *Phèdre*, and *Alicie* are clad in aristocratic costumes, while the gods and the crowd perform songs and dances in modern, at times kitschy, attire, creating a striking effect. Led by the Ensemble Pygmalion—under the baton of the up-and-coming early music conductor Raphaël Pichon and featuring a cast of accomplished singers, including the internationally renowned haute contre singer Reinout van Mehelen (Hippolyte)—the ensemble tackles Rameau’s music head-on.
