Description:
Schnittke, a composer of Jewish and German descent, was German as a boy and received his first musical education at the age of 12 in Vienna, where his father was posted. 14 years old, he moved to Moscow, where he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory at the age of 27. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory for the next 10 years, and then spent some time composing film music, which he had been doing since the 1960s. By 1984, he had composed 66 pieces of film music, which show the various forms of his self-described "polystylist" compositional style, ranging from beautiful pseudo-Baroque melodies to experimental compositions. Frank Strobel, known for his reprinting of Prokofiev's "Ivan the Terrible" and many other film scores, has been eager to introduce Schnittke's film music, and has previously reorganized soundtracks such as "The Story of an Unknown Actor" and "The Adventures of the Dentist" into a suite, but now The Daytime Star," "Beloved," and "Father Sergiy" have been reorganized into a suite, allowing the audience to hear the story through sound to its fullest.
