Bach (1685-1750)
Description:
Brunello, whose Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Cello have been a great success, will now enter the world of Bach even further! It is known that the form of the cello instrument was not established until the 18th century, and that various models existed side by side. Italian virtuoso Mario Brunello recently favored the four-stringed cello piccolo (small cello), which is tuned one octave below the violin. With this instrument, which was reproduced based on Amati's model, Brunello recorded all six of Bach's unaccompanied sonatas and partitas for violin, creating a great sensation as a fresh acoustic experience. Following in that vein, the challenge this time is Bach's six Sonatas for Violin and Obligato Harpsichord, which are equally important as Bach's violin works." The harpsichord part, which is required to participate, is not a basso continuo, but a three-voice music in which both the left and right hands are notated, and the right hand part is on equal footing with the violin. The cover of one of the surviving manuscripts of the work states that "the bass part may be overlaid with a gamba," and Francesco Garrigioni followed this suggestion and played both baroque cello and gamba in this recording.Roberto Loreggian, who has also built his career in Italian classical music, uses both harpsichord and organ (in some movements he uses both at the same time), and with Brunello playing the violin part and Gaggiolini in the bass part, he creates a rich vocabulary of music that is varied yet consistently sincere and entertaining. The interpretation is varied, yet consistently honest and entertaining. The CD also includes comments from the performers and a commentary by Bach scholar Peter Volney and others. Naxos Japan
