Description:
With wind instruments! Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" was so popular in 18th century France that "Spring" was still performed in the repertoire until 1763, when Mozart and his son visited Paris. This album, recorded at the Palace of Versailles by a group of the best talents in French classical music, led by cellist Sol Gavetta's brother, baroque violin virtuoso Andres Gavetta, is an excellent project that traces the theme of "the changing seasons" in music, just as the French people felt in the 18th century. In addition to Vivaldi's unique interpretation, the album also includes "The Four Seasons" by Guido, a violinist and composer of the same generation who came to France after training in Naples. Guido's work was published the year after Vivaldi's or within a few years of Vivaldi's, but this was an ensemble piece presented at the court of Duke Philippe of Orleans, who, contrary to the French musical absolutism promoted by Louis XIV, supported Italian music from his lifetime and patronized the activities of many Italian musicians, Like Vivaldi's work, it is an adaptation of a poem by an unknown author. It is a gem with a structure reminiscent of a dance-musical drama by Rubell and Rameau, and a dynamic, ever-changing music with Italian taste similar to Vivaldi's. The work was composed for the court of Philippe, Duke of Orleans, who supported many Italian musicians from the time of Vivaldi. In contrast, Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is also performed in the 18th century, with the addition of wind instruments to create a richly colorful sound. The pastoral recorder in "Spring" (played by the talented Sébastien Marc) and the hunting horn and peaceful oboe in "Autumn" are irresistible. The musicians include Hardy Gardy and the brilliant Stéphane Fugier, and one of the lutenists is André Henriques. The presence of a new generation of Japanese old music players based in Europe, such as clavecinist Yoko Nakamura, who plays in Philippe Jaroussky's Ensemble Artaserse, and violinist Koji Yoda, a member of La Musica Collana, will also shine through.
