Recorded live in January 2005. Performed in Munich at the first important concert of the new year, this is a full Bruckner performance by Jansons, who has just celebrated his 62nd birthday. This live album was originally distributed to orchestra members only, but last year it was released as one of the six discs in the "Bruckner Selections" set by Jansons, and this is the first time it is available for resale. Jansons adopted the "Third Draft," revised in 1889. The third draft, which was modified around the time of the completion of the first draft of Symphony No. 8, contains a number of Wagnerian motifs that were included in the original conception, as well as revisions to the orchestration. The third draft is highly acclaimed for its high degree of perfection, and many conductors now use the third draft. Jansons' performance is crisp and clear. In the first movement, which uses a variety of materials, he handles the tempo changes beautifully, and in the lyrical second movement, he makes the melody sing with plenty of power. In the lyrical second movement, he sings the melody with great feeling, and in the third movement, a rough waltz rhythm is handled lightly, as is typical of Bruckner.In the solemn fourth movement, the music is energetic, and at the end of the piece, the opening theme of the first movement is sung in a pleasantly high tone. The great applause that erupts after the final note fades away and after a moment of silence speaks volumes about the excellence of this performance. Naxos Japan
