Rosenmüller was born in Germany and became an organist at St. Nikolai's Church, but was imprisoned on charges of homosexuality, which was forbidden at the time. He lost all his positions and fled to Venice, but fortunately, he gained fame in Italy and eventually returned to Germany after restoring his honor, leading a tumultuous life. The previously released "Festive Music and Religious Concertos" (555187) was an album celebrating the 400th anniversary of Rosenmüller's birth, and in this album we hear Magnificat, religious concertos, and other works that combine the musical styles of 17th century Italy and Germany with a glorious atmosphere The album features Magnificat, religious concertos, and other works that combine 17th century Italian and German musical styles. Gregor Mayer, artistic director of Ensemble 1684, is also artistic director of the Gewandhaus Choir and a scholar of Rosenmüller's works.
