Discover, Gulda's "Symphony"! Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in the Big Band! This album features jazz performances of Friedrich Gulda's own compositions. Of particular interest is the "Symphony in G major," which was session-recorded in the studio. Curiously, the existence of this work has never been known to anyone, and it was discovered by chance this time while searching Gurda's past recordings in the SWR archives. It is not known what Goulda wrote the piece for, and there is no indication that it was ever performed publicly. Composed in classical sonata form with a jazz idiom, it is a large work in the form of a jazz band and classical string ensemble, each movement lasting over 10 minutes and the total duration of the three movements is 35 minutes. The entire piece, including the strings, swings in a spectacular manner, but there are also baroque-like phrases and sweet strings and oboe like mood music that was at its height at the time, demonstrating Goulda's wide range of musicality and making the work very listenable. It is surprising that such a masterpiece has been buried for so long. The second half is a live recording of the solo piano performance in Heidelberg.This is a heartwarming and precious recording, with Gurda's unique slow and steady music that combines beautiful melodies with thrilling developments, and you can feel the interaction with the audience in the recorded applause.
