A Surprisingly Unrecorded Collection of Secular MusicSince the 1980s and 1990s, the Clément-Januquin Ensemble has continued to introduce the interest in French vocal music of the Renaissance period. Dominique Vis, the leader of the group, is still active in the unique character of baroque opera, but it has been several years since they recorded as an ensemble. It is also a pleasure to hear them spend an entire album exploring the French Renaissance repertoire, where their musicality and theatrical presence stand out, as well as the secular chansons of Josquin des Prés. Josquin was active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when the Flemish school of music was at its most prominent, and his immense fame spread throughout Europe, as far north as Italy. Today, while there are many recordings of relatively large-scale church music, there are far fewer systematic recordings of secular chansons, another core area of music. This new recording is a comprehensive selection of the most important elements of chansons, including not only many of the well-known masterpieces, but also the instrumental version of "A Thousand Sorrows," which was created after the death of the composer.With commentary based on the latest findings, the album is aptly named for the aptitude and fertile practical experience of the French-speaking singers.
