Description:
Cesti was a 17th century composer. After studying under Carissimi in Rome and making a great success as an opera composer in Florence, he became court music director in Innsbruck and in 1666 became deputy music director at the court of Vienna, where he spent the rest of his life. The opera "La Dori, or the Noble Slave" is set in Babylon on the Euphrates River. Princess Dori of Nicaea was betrothed to Prince Orontes of Persia at an early age, but was later taken to Egypt by pirates and raised as an Egyptian princess. Dori and Oronte are reunited in Egypt, but Oronte is called back to Persia when her father becomes ill. Dori follows Oronte to Persia, disguised as a man, and is caught by bandits and sold as a slave. The story concludes with the reunion of Dori and Oronte, interspersed with comical episodes of fateful twists and turns. The opera premiered in 1657 at the court of Innsbruck, where Cesti was serving, and was performed in Italy for the wedding festivities of the Medici family, as well as in a series of highly popular productions around the country. This film is a record of a performance in Innsbruck, the composer's birthplace, in 2019 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of his death.Starting with the light singing of the highly skilled soloists, Dantone, who is well known for his performances of 17th century works, and the ensemble of Accademia Bizantina bring back to life masterpieces that had receded into the distance in the passage of time.
