Description:
The second collection of concertos by the Scottish Italian, Francesco Barsanti, now generally known for his recorder and flute works, was born in Lucca, Italy, studied music in Padua, moved to England, and then to Scotland, where he lived as a violinist and composer. He arranged many Scottish folk songs and published seven works during his lifetime, including six recorder sonatas (Op. 1), six flute sonatas (Op. 2), and ten ensemble concertos (Op. 3), published in 1742. The Ensemble Marschuas, organized by the brilliant Peter Whelan, principal bassoonist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, tenor singer, and accompanist on piano to pass bass on harpsichord, recorded in 2017 "Edinburgh 1742" (CKD567), which includes the works 10, the first five tracks of which are presented here. The album received high praise across the board from ICMA and Gramophone magazines.This second volume includes the second half of the concerto, a duet of Scottish folk songs for violin and guitar, and the overture to "Atalanta," a work by Handel that was also included in the previous volume.
