The great pianist Alfred Brendel said, "The Hungarian Rhapsody must be defended against two prejudices. On the one hand, from the pretentious musicians who dismiss it as a "showpiece" without substance, and on the other hand, from the piano enthusiasts who use it as a "showpiece" and as a platform to show off their skills. The young Bulgarian pianist Martin Ivanov's performance fits neither category. While of course there is a surprising amount of virtuosity, he manages to bring out the full poetic and delicate beauty of this collection, and his playing is perfectly in tune with the works.
