The Turanga Lila Symphony is one of Messiaen's masterpieces. The title of the work is a combination of two Sanskrit words, "Turanga" (meaning time, weather, rhythm, etc.) and "Lila" (meaning play, love, performance, etc.), and Messiaen himself called the work a "love song" or "hymn of joy. It is a gigantic work in ten movements, and the performance is lavishly decorated with numerous percussion instruments, piano, and Messiaen's beloved ondes martenots, all of which are used to great effect. The ondes martenots on this album are played by Thomas Bloch, who is also known as a composer. The music is performed by Thomas Blosch, who is also known as a composer. The music director of the National Theater Orchestra of Mannheim since the 2016/17 season is Alexander Sodi, a young man born in Oxford in 1982, who is known for his achievements in dramatically expanding the orchestra's repertoire since he took over, and in this Messiaen he and the orchestra work together brilliantly.
