Description:
Cantata and viola da gamba concerto by German composer Johann Gottlieb Graun. Although Graun was known as a virtuoso violinist, there is no record of his playing the viola da gamba. However, he left 27 works in which the instrument plays an active role, and the concerto in particular contains passages that seem to challenge the player's technique, suggesting Graun's mastery of and interest in the technique of playing the gamba. In addition to the concerto, the album includes two cantatas in which the viola da gamba appears in a spectacular solo part. These are solo cantatas in the Italian style, using texts by Metastasio, the most famous composer of the time, and require a high degree of skill in singing. A soprano specializing in Baroque music, Forsythe is a regular singer at the Boston Early Music Festival. She sings beautiful melodies with the viola da gamba of Contadin, the founder of Opera Prima, and captivates the audience. Naxos Japan
