The Cologne Academy, which specializes in works from the Baroque period, presents a collection of Easter cantatas by Agricola and Homilius. Agricola was considered one of the best church musicians of his time, serving as court composer to King Frederick II of Prussia and composing a great deal of church music. This cantata was performed on the first day of Easter in 1758 at St. Peter's Church in Berlin. Homilius, on the other hand, was a composer who worked mainly at the Church of Our Lady in Dresden. This cantata was performed in Dresden in 1767. It is a large work consisting of 10 parts, and is attractive for its neat brushwork, which is reminiscent of the early classical style without much use of counterpoint. Agricola's Ein musikalisches Gedich (Musical Poem) is a recitative with free accompaniment. Mysterious subjects such as earthquakes and the resurrection of Jesus are sung. Naxos Japan
