Brahms's two cello sonatas, No. 1, completed in 1865, were originally conceived as a four-movement work, but the slow movement was never placed and was presented as a three-movement sonata. The slow movement was then used in No. 2, composed 21 years later. Both works are full of the rich melodic beauty typical of Brahms, and are characterized by the piano, which is given an important role, playing an active role and engaging in an intimate dialogue with the cello. Müller-Schott and Francesco Piemontesi, a pianist known for his virtuosic performances of Liszt's "Pilgrim's Progress" and other works, give a wonderful performance on this recording. In 2012, the two recorded the Britten, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich sonatas (C872151), which was also highly praised as "beyond Rostropovich. In this Brahms recording, the two musicians engage in a lively back-and-forth exchange, and the profundity of Brahms's music is fully expressed. The album also includes the cello version of the Violin Sonata No. 1 "Rain Song. This version was further arranged by Müller-Schott based on a version by an unknown arranger.The sound of the cello is impressive, as if it were speaking to you. Naxos Japan
