Jakub Gotovac is one of the leading contemporary Croatian composers. He studied under Josef Marx in Vienna, and while performing operas as a conductor at the Zagreb Opera, he left many works as a composer, including operas, orchestral and piano pieces, and songs. His style is in the style of the late Romantic period, and all of his works are full of folkloric elements and easy to listen to. The opera "Ero the Prankster," composed in 1935, is Gotovac's most successful work, combining a humorous story with Croatian folklore. Since its premiere at the Zagreb Opera, the work has been translated into nine languages and has been performed in more than 80 opera houses throughout Europe, with 2018 marking the 700th anniversary of the production.The 700th performance was in German, but the Munich performance recorded on this album is the original Croatian version, with conductor Lepšić and all the main singers being native Croatian speakers, and the chorus being brought all the way from Croatia.
