The album includes Charpentier's "Te Deum," which begins with a fanfare familiar from the opening broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic's "New Year's Concert," and the Mass, an exceptional work in which wind ensembles were used to replace various types of sound plugs in churches where organs were not available. This is a rare album made possible by the presence of an elite group of ancient instruments led by Tubery, a virtuoso recorder and woodwind cornet player. In addition to the talented Namur Chamber Choir, the soloists, including Claire Lefriatre, who was also a star of Le Poème Armonique, are also talented and provide a strange and wonderful voice. (C)RS
