The Italian opera composer Draghi, who was active in Vienna, will perform a Spanish-language opera in a new, complementary version. Born in Rimini, Italy, Draghi made his name as an opera singer, especially in Cavalli's works. Although he also composed many operas, they are rarely performed today. Draghi was the first composer of Italian origin to be active in Vienna's imperial court, and his and other Italians' overwhelming success prevented Schmelzer and other German-speaking composers from holding the most important jobs in the city. The three-act opera "El Prometeo" (The Prometheus), preserved in the Vienna Library, is a unique work of the 17th century, when the Habsburgs ruled both Austria and Spain. While the first and second acts are extant, only the libretto and score for the third act have been lost. This CD contains the lost Act III, which Alarcon has restored and greatly revised in accordance with the musical composition of the time. Prometheus is crucified on a mountain top as punishment for defying Zeus and giving fire to mortals. The punishment was so severe that he was gut-pecked by an eagle while still alive, and his entrails were resurrected every day, so his suffering lasted forever.The music is lively and full of the Spanish colors that Alarcon is known for, with castanets and other instruments introduced with an awareness of the Spanish script. In particular, the third act, which Alarcon completed with additions, is a more passionate and lively performance, although the music is well adapted to it.
