Description:

Jolly (Joli) Braga Santos is one of the most important Portuguese composers of the 20th century. His early works were based on the Romantic style, but his style changed around 1960, when he began to skillfully incorporate chromaticism and folk music, and for a time he wrote colorful works influenced by British composers Vaughan Williams and Moran. In this first collection, we can hear three works written over a period of about 40 years, from the String Quartet No. 1, written in 1945 when Braga Santos was 21 years old, to the String Sextet, composed in 1986, and we can enjoy the variety of styles of Braga Santos. The long, breathy melody in the second movement of String Quartet No. 2 is especially memorable. Naxos Japan
