Schumann's concerto is widely popular, but Mendelssohn's poetic beauty and virtuosity are no less so, and Fritter's solid technique and lyrical singing are a major attraction. Mendes, the conductor, is a young Spanish hotshot. He uses ancient instruments for trumpet, horn and timpani.
