Otmar Maja, a Czech composer active in the 20th century, became the first music director of Czechoslovak Radio in 1962, where he composed while producing music programs. His works ranged from symphonic poems, songs, and chamber music to music for television programs, and his choral works in particular were widely popular. His oratorio "Czech Fatherland," premiered in 1990, is one of his best-known works and offers a dramatic story that opens with an eerie series of sounds (almost like shaking the earth). The colorful "Variations" and the Violin Concerto, with its intense violin wailing, are all worth listening to. Naxos Japan
