Founded in 1993 by Le Sage, Meyer, and Payou, this annual chamber music festival in the beautiful town of Avignon in southeastern France is a celebration of the finest music by the best performers. A new series of recordings from the festival, entitled "Music in the Salon," is now available. The first release is a collection of Beethoven's trios spun by clarinet virtuoso Paul Meyer, longtime collaborator Eric Le Sage, and cellist Claudio Bohorquez, winner of the 1995 Geneva International Competition. Most chamber music of Beethoven's time was written for aristocrats with musical backgrounds, and once they gained a reputation, they were required to arrange the same piece for various orchestras. The theme of "Songs of the City" is based on a melody from Weigl's opera, which was popular at the time, and the clarinet part is written somewhat plainly for the convenience of the performer, but the work is very accomplished and has an openheartedness that reveals a young and ambitious Beethoven.The septet was arranged in various forms for the same reason, but this triplet version radiates simplicity and beauty.
